“A No Spend Week” sounds horrifying doesn’t it? I am planning for my first ever no spend week coming up next week.
Over the past couple of years my spending has been out of control (shh! don’t tell the hubby!) I know better and I am good at budgeting, not certain why I let myself get out of control.
I am getting back in control of my finances. A no spend week is something I have been thinking about for a while. Now it is time to put into action.
Planning Ahead of Time
Planning a no spend week is not something you just get up one day and say, “I am not going to spend money next week.” This type of thing takes planning. The idea is not to spend a ton of money the week before and after. Here are the steps I took in my planning:
- Tracked my spending during my work week to determine where my money goes
- Decide what can be eliminated and eliminate it
- Go through my cabinets and refrigerator to see what foods I can use to meal plan with
- Make sure we have what we need for work and school lunches
- Plan activities that does not require us to spend money
I am not sure how others do this but I plan on paying my bills that are due during that week. The last thing you want is to do is accumulate late charges on bills, this will defeat your purpose. So, for me I will be paying the bills by their due date. At the end of my no spend week, any money I saved during that week I am going to split and put some on a bill and the rest in savings. If you are looking for information on budgeting see my post on a family budget.
Free Activities During My Week
In order to not spend money I have a plan for free activities to do that will not cost a penny. I have been trying to do better at exercising so I will take walks, read, take the kids to the park (it is in walking distance so I don’t have to use gas). If time allows, I may use this week to clean out closets and sell anything we are not using or don’t need. This is also a perfect time to review my budget and make plans for paying down debt.
I will also be working on the different ways to earn extra income and getting my Swagbucks points. For information on how to make money through Swagbucks check out this post. One of the other ways I have been earning extra money is through Shopstyle. If you are interested in passive income this is a good source.
I hope this is helpful for your no spend weekend/week/month! Let me know if you have any questions.
